Navigating the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE)

Exploring a career in the legal field, specifically as a paralegal, requires a solid foundation, dedication, and a demonstration of superior competency. One of the ways paralegals can display their advanced proficiency is through the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam, commonly referred to as the PACE Exam. This substantial evaluation designed by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) sets forth a high standard of aptitude and can be the differentiating factor that propels your career to new heights.

What Exactly is the PACE Exam?

The PACE exam, a comprehensive and exhaustive evaluation, was initiated in 1996 with the goal to assess the competency level of experienced paralegals. It's designed to cover the critical aspects of the paralegal profession, covering real estate, business organizations, administrative law, litigation, and procedural rules to name just a few. It is a well-respected credential in the legal field and is often favored by employers.

It’s worthwhile to note that the PACE exam is a hulking challenge. The exam is divided into two distinct parts: the first part consists of 200 multiple-choice questions, and the second part features two essay questions. The entire exam runs for approximately four hours.

Who is Eligible for the PACE Exam?

The PACE exam isn't for greenhorn paralegals; it's specifically designed for experienced paralegals. To be eligible for the exam, candidates must fulfill either one of the following criteria:

  • Have an associate degree in paralegal studies (or a related field), and three years of substantive paralegal experience.

  • Have a certificate from a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association (ABA), and two years of substantive paralegal experience.

  • Have a bachelor's degree in any field plus one year of substantive paralegal experience.

  • Have four years of paralegal experience, where at least one year of the experience is substantive.

Remember to make sure that your work experience is within the last 15 years.

Advantages of Passing the PACE Exam

Passing the PACE exam grants an individual the 'Registered Paralegal' or RP credential, increasing their worth in the eyes of the employer drastically. Having the RP accreditation elevates your resume, showcasing your dedication, advanced skills, and competency.

More often than not, paralegals vested with the RP credential have a competitive edge over those who aren't. This may translate into more job opportunities, career advancement, and potentially, a higher salary.

Brandishing the RP credential showcases a commitment to the profession, to continuing education, and to high ethical standards - all desirable traits in potential employees.

Preparing for the PACE Exam

Given the complex nature of the PACE exam, preparation is key. As applicants are required to have several years of substantive paralegal experience, study material can be broad and exhaustive. Here are a few tips to aid in your preparation:

  • Utilize the PACE Study Manual: The NFPA provides a PACE Study Manual that contains extensive information to assist you with your preparation. It comprises topic summaries, references for further reading, and practice tests with answers.

  • Join a Study Group: Collaborating with other aspiring paralegals adds variety to your exam preparation and provides a platform to discuss tough topics.

  • Create a Study Schedule: Given the sheer volume of material, creating a study schedule helps maintain focus and ensure all topics are covered.

  • Take Practice Tests: Accumulated knowledge is only as good as its application. Practice tests helped identify areas of weakness and provide an idea of the exam's structure.

  • Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Regular exercise, good nutrition, and adequate rest all contribute to better memorization and concentration.

Taking The Leap

Taking the PACE exam is indeed a big step. However, don’t let the exam’s mammoth size intimidate you. With the right preparation strategy, support, and determination, the PACE exam is just another hurdle to overcome on your path to becoming a highly competent and indispensable paralegal. So, put your best foot forward, and start your journey toward success!
